While this remains in the theoretical realm for now, and NASA hasn’t developed a way to easily hop between planets, the technology is undeniably intriguing. “This study changes the conversation about warp drives,” lead author Jared Fuchs from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and the research think tank Applied Physics, stated. “By demonstrating a first-of-its-kind model, we’ve shown that warp drives might not be relegated to science fiction.”

The team’s model employs “a sophisticated blend of traditional and novel gravitational techniques to create a warp bubble that can transport objects at high speeds within the bounds of known physics,” as per the statement.

“Physicists can now generate and refine an array of warp drive designs with just a few clicks, allowing us to advance science at warp speed,” stated Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics. “Warp Factory serves as a virtual wind tunnel, enabling us to test and evaluate different warp designs. Science fiction is now inching closer to science fact.”

Operated as a Public Benefit Company, Applied Physics is offering up to $500,000 in potential grants for aspiring warp drive theorists. However, the grants come with conditions, chiefly emphasizing the development of a physical warp drive grounded in classical relativity, eschewing “negative energy or superluminal matter” in propelling the time-distorting engine.

The financial incentive for cracking warp speed is substantial. Nevertheless, within the realm of space exploration, it may only be a drop in the bucket. While Boeing’s Starliner mission, which recently launched, operated on a budget of roughly $4 billion, while NASA’s Artemis missions carry a budget nearing $8 billion.
