Are you ready for the ride of your life? Loved the first Extraction movie? Don’t miss Extraction 2, hitting Netflix on June 23, 2023. This article covers this awaited thriller, with Chris Hemsworth returning as Tyler Rake.
What is Extraction 2 about?
Extraction 2, out in April 2020, directly follows the first movie. It’s among the most-watched Netflix originals. The story follows Tyler Rake, a former Australian special forces soldier who works as a black-market mercenary. In the first movie, he rescues Ovi Mahajan, an Indian drug lord’s kidnapped son, from a Dhaka gang. The mission was full of danger, betrayal, and violence and ended with Tyler sacrificing his life to save Ovi.
Yet, a post-credits scene possibly reveals Tyler alive, observing Ovi from a distance. Extraction 2 confirms that Tyler survived his wounds and is back for another risky assignment. Now, Tyler must save Zurab Radiani’s imprisoned family. Zurab, a vengeful Georgian gangster, has a grudge against Tyler. He collaborates again with old allies Nik Khan, a former CIA operative, and young hacker Yaz Khan. Together, they face a new wave of enemies and obstacles in their quest to free Zurab’s wife and children.
Who is behind it?
Continuing in the director’s chair, Sam Hargrave, who skillfully directed the first movie, is also at the helm for Extraction 2. Hargrave, a former stunt coordinator and double, worked alongside Chris Evans, who portrayed the character Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his directorial debut with Extraction, which was praised for its impressive action sequences and choreography. Hargrave has said that he wanted to make Extraction 2 bigger, bolder, and more ambitious than the first one and pushed himself and his cast to their physical limits.
Joe Russo, best known for co-directing four Marvel movies with his brother Anthony: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, wrote the screenplay for Extraction 2. He also wrote and produced the first movie. Russo wanted to explore Tyler’s character more deeply in Extraction 2 and drew inspiration from classic action movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.
The producer of Extraction 2 is Chris Hemsworth himself, along with Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Mike Larocca, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Hemsworth expressed his thrill at reprising his role as Tyler Rake and his enjoyment in working with Hargrave and Russo again. He conveyed his astonishment at the support and feedback from the fans of the first movie and voiced his hopes to deliver an even more satisfying experience with Extraction 2.
